Korean Rice Cake Shapes: What to Buy for Tteokguk and Tteokbokki

For a standard bowl of tteokguk, start with thin, oval rice-cake slices labeled 떡국떡. For a tteokbokki recipe calling for rice-cake sticks, look for 떡볶이떡 and match the size shown or described in the recipe. After choosing the shape, check the ingredients and whether the package contains plain cakes or a complete meal kit.

The Korea Tourism Organization describes tteokguk as sliced rice cakes cooked in broth; its Korean-food guide (PDF) identifies the familiar oval shape. Its description of royal tteokbokki uses rice-cake sticks. These are helpful starting shapes, with room for regional and product variations.

Tteokguk slices make the soup choice easier

Look for 떡국떡, which identifies cakes intended for rice-cake soup. English labels may use wording such as “sliced rice cake.” Use the package photograph to confirm that you are buying the slices your recipe shows.

The rice cakes are only one part of the shopping list. Your chosen soup recipe determines the broth, seasoning and garnish. The Korea Tourism Organization notes that tteokguk can use beef broth or regional seafood-based broths, so a bag of soup rice cakes does not imply one required soup base. Tteokguk dish description

Write the broth ingredients separately. This small step helps prevent getting home with the correct slices but no plan for the soup around them.

Tteokbokki cakes come in more than one version

떡볶이떡 identifies cakes for tteokbokki, but it does not promise one fixed size or ingredient list. Pulmuone's official range includes plain rice, wheat and noodle-shaped versions, as well as cheese-filled cakes.

For a first attempt, match the recipe's plain cake type and shape before trying a filled or unusually shaped version. If the recipe says “rice-cake sticks” and shows short cylinders, choose a similar product rather than deciding by bag color or brand alone.

The dish name also does not mean every version requires a red sauce. Royal tteokbokki uses a soy-sauce seasoning, as described in the official food guide. Buy the sauce ingredients for the particular version you intend to cook.

Read shape and ingredients separately

Comparison 1
Label term What it tells you What still needs checking
떡국떡 Cakes intended for tteokguk Shape, thickness and ingredients
떡볶이떡 Cakes intended for tteokbokki Size, formulation and any filling
쌀 Rice The complete ingredient list
밀 Wheat The complete ingredient and allergen information
치즈 Cheese Whether the cakes are filled and what the filling contains
소스 / 양념 Sauce / seasoning Whether it is included or sold separately

The distinction between rice and wheat is worth checking even when a shop uses “rice cakes” as a broad English category. Pulmuone separately lists 순쌀 떡볶이떡 and 밀 떡볶이 떡 in its range. A category name or white appearance cannot replace the label. Manufacturer's listing

A plain ingredient and a kit need different shopping lists

Before adding a package to your basket, answer these three questions:

  1. What is inside? Check for plain cakes, a sauce packet or other included components.
  2. How much cake do I need? Compare your recipe quantity with the stated cake weight if the kit lists components separately.
  3. What must I add? Copy the package's required additions or your recipe's remaining ingredients into the list.

For example, a plain bag of tteokbokki cakes lets you follow your chosen sauce recipe. A kit may already supply seasoning, so buying an additional tub of paste is useful only if the instructions or another planned dish call for it.

Check preparation when changing shapes

If a recipe gives directions for both slices and sticks, follow the version that matches your package. Otherwise, changing shape leaves a preparation question that the recipe has not answered. Check the maker's instructions or choose a recipe using the shape you have rather than carrying over a cooking time unchanged.

Check 보관방법, storage instructions, and 조리방법, preparation instructions, on the actual package. This guide does not assign one soaking time or storage method to every rice cake. Your most useful first purchase is the plain shape and formulation your chosen recipe names, in an amount you have a plan to use.
